Are H1, H2 and H3 tags important for SEO?

One of my blog readers recently submitted the following question:

When writing website content, is it important to have H1, H2 and H3 tags within the copy and do they help with SEO?

The simple answer is yes to both parts of the question.

H tags with copy…

Much like any magazine or newspaper – articles are defined with large and bold headlines to entice the reader to read more. H tags can entice the user of a website to read more copy or they can be used to scan a page so it’s important to included features and benefits about your company within the H tags.

H tags and SEO…

In my opinion, H tags contribute a small percentage to on-page SEO greatness. Much like many on-page factors, adding all of these together can produce great results.

H tag rules…

I have found that only having one H1 tag and one H2 tag works better than having multiple H1/H2 tags. Using multiple H3, H4, H5 tags isn’t a problem.

Here is a video from Matt Cutts who says that using multiple H1 tags is OK if used very lightly, but as he says “use it where it makes sense” which suggests to me from an SEO point-of-view, use the H1 as the opening headline only.
